Devlog #2: Unfolding the Art Direction

Hey there! It's been quite a journey as we've been diligently working on Unfold: A Paper Adventure. Today, we want to discuss one of the most crucial aspects of game development – the art direction.

When we set out to create Unfold, we knew the game's visual style would be pivotal to the overall experience. After all, our game is about navigating a whimsical world as a piece of paper, and the art needed to reflect the uniqueness of this concept. So, let's dive into how we arrived at the art direction that brings our paper adventure to life.

The journey began with a simple yet profound concept: exploring a macro world from the perspective of a tiny boat. With its versatility, a simple sheet of paper emerged as the perfect protagonist for our adventure. Our initial vision involved placing a paper boat in the familiar human world, and we constructed our concept around this central idea.

Soon, we realized that our levels were beginning to lose the clarity of our artistic vision. As a determined team, we decided to shift our focus towards a more specific and fitting approach to world-building. That's when we fully embraced the concept of immersing players in the serene beauty of a Japanese garden.

This concept continued to develop, inspiring us with additional ideas about the world and its underlying rules. The distinctive elements of Japanese gardens seamlessly transformed into game mechanics and visual aesthetics. As we refined our level art, we noticed a shift towards a less grounded look, leading us to adopt a more defined yet somewhat mythical color palette to enhance the overall experience.

Iterating on the art direction was a constant process. We created prototypes, ran countless tests, and discussed our findings. We tweaked the lighting, the textures, and the details repeatedly until we felt like we had truly captured the magic of a living piece of paper in our game.

Unfold: A Paper Adventure is now a world of unfolding wonders and relaxing beauty. We can't wait to share it with you. Keep an eye out for our upcoming updates.

Your feedback is invaluable in shaping the final look of the game. Thank you for being part of this adventure with us!
